Top 5 Benefits of an Australian Permanent Residency (PR)

Australia is one of the most desirable countries in the world. Migrants and international students find themselves flocking to the Land Down Under for a better life, quality education and various work opportunities. This is because Australia has a high standard of living, an outstanding human development index, a universal healthcare system, a multicultural society, an exceptional and globally recognized educational system, beautiful sceneries, a pleasant climate and of course, pathways to permanent residency.

Permanent residency is one major reason many people choose to live and study in Australia over other countries. But besides the obvious reason of being able to live in Australia indefinitely, do you the other benefits of gaining permanent residency? Here are some benefits of obtaining an Australian permanent residency you may not have known before:

WORK ANYWHERE IN AUSTRALIA

If you have a permanent residency in Australia, there are additional work benefits you get over someone who simply has a work visa. You can work anywhere within Australia, for any employer, in any industry you choose and for how long you want. The freedom to choose is yours.

However, there is one exception to your freedom to work anywhere as a permanent resident. You won’t be allowed to work in the Armed forces and public services.

FREEDOM TO TRAVEL AND AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP
There are various constraints on travel for someone who is on a work or student visa. But if you’ve got PR, you can travel wherever and whenever you like. However, please note that if your PR expires during the time you’re out of the country, you will have to apply for a 5-year Resident Return Visa (RRV) to renew your permanent residency.

Another great advantage of PR is that with this, you’re given a clear pathway to apply for Australian citizenship. If you’re on a PR and have lived in Australia for four years with at least one of those years as a permanent resident, you can apply for Australian citizenship. This goes without saying but holding an Australian passport is powerful. An Australian passport allows you to travel visa-free to over 180 countries and is ranked 9th as one of the most powerful passports in the world. As an Australian citizen, you can vote in elections, apply for government and public service jobs, travel easily etc.

FREE HEALTHCARE

Healthcare is at the top of many lists when speaking about reasons to settle down in a new country. As an international student, you’ll need to get your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and for many, this can be costly. Paying hospital bills or getting treatment is expensive for migrants but as a permanent resident of Australia, you are automatically eligible to enrol in Medicare which is Australia’s public healthcare service

With Medicare, you can avail of healthcare services at low or almost no cost. You will have access to free treatment at public hospitals, access to subsidised services and medicine, cheaper health insurance and bulk billing. Medicare covers:

  • Seeing a GP (General Practitioner)
  • Eye tests
  • X-rays, CT scans, MRIs and other tests
  • Minor surgeries and other medical procedures

COMMONWEALTH-SUPPORTED PLACES (CPS)

With an Australian permanent residency, you will have access to the Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs). The CSP is a place at a university or higher education provider where the government pays part of your fees and this isn’t a loan so you won’t have to pay it back.

Since tuition fees are higher for international students than domestic students, CSP will be useful for you as a permanent resident. Please note, that the CSP does not cover the entire cost of a student’s study and most CSPs are for undergraduate study. However, some providers offer CSPs at the postgraduate level.

CREDIT RATING AND CENTRELINK

As a permanent resident in Australia, your credit rating will improve. And as a result, you’ll have access to personal loans, car loans, home loans and credit cards. Additionally, you will get faster approval on loans and the interest rates will go down. Needless to say, as your credit rating goes up, you won’t need to pay expensive fees out of pocket with loans.

But there’s more. With your PR, you will also have access to Centrelink and if you don’t know what it is, here’s a simple explanation. Centrelink offers social welfare aid related to students, sicknesses, and unemployment.
